2024 Open Burning is Open

Open burning in Gallatin County is open as of March 1, 2024.

Burn Permits

Open Burning Closed

County regulated Open Burning is closed as of December 1, 2024.  It will reopen on March 1, 2024.

While County Open Burning is closed, individuals may still be able to burn under Montana DEQ Winter Burning regulations.  Information on DEQ Winter Burning is available at:  https://deq.mt.gov/air/Programs/burning.

Steps for DEQ Burning are:

  1. Fill out a DEQ Winter Burning request form online for up to a 3 day period.
  2. DEQ will email back information on if you are approved, the approved duration, and any other conditions.
  3. If approved, you must obtain a DEQ Winter Burning Notification Permit from Gallatin County, and activate that each day you burn.
